The type of health insurance familiar to most consumers is group coverage offered by an employer. With group health insurance through your employer the policy is partially paid for by the company on behalf of their employees. The company will contribute a large percentage toward the monthly premium and you (the employee) will be responsible for paying the difference, about 16-27%. With group plans you have little choice in the specific benefits of the plan (these are determined by negotiations between the company and the insurance carrier) but you also cannot be denied coverage under the group plan no matter what prescriptions you may take or preexisting conditions you may have. By insuring a large group of employees together under one plan of the company’s choosing, individual employees are not medically underwritten, rather the entire group is underwritten as a whole to determine the premium level everyone will pay.

Tennessee College / University Coverage Requirements

Some Tennessee colleges and universities may require that students to have some form of health insurance coverage. You should check with the admissions office to determine if health insurance coverage is required.

Benefits / Advantages of Student Plan
Some benefits of a student plan include:

You’re covered all year, not just during the school year.

You’re covered no matter where you go. School-sponsored plans might only cover you within the state where you go to school. If you are on your parent’s health insurance plan and move out of state, you could run into the same issue.

If you transfer schools, you plan moves with you. This might not be the case for school-sponsored health plans.

A new Tennessee private health insurance plan may be right for you if:

You are self employed
Your employer does not offer a group plan
You are enrolled in a group plan, but it does not cover spouses or dependents
You are enrolled in a health plan, but the premiums are too high
You are enrolled in a health plan, but your benefits needs have changed

If both you and your spouse or domestic partner are looking for a new health insurance plan, we recommend that you look up health insurance quotes both together and separately to find the plan that is most affordable for you.

Depending on the health insurance company, Tennessee individual and family health insurance rates for couples can be based on the age of the youngest person on the policy. Some couples with an age difference of several years may find they save money by applying for the same plan rather than individually. Couples that are only a few years apart might be able to reduce their total costs by applying for separate health insurance plans. If you decide to apply for a health insurance plan as a couple, make sure the plan you choose covers the benefits both of you need.
